Dear Integrity Sisters and Brothers,

The next meeting of the Northeast Ohio Chapter will be held on Sunday, July 15 at 5:30 p.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Lakewood. The church is located at 18001 Detroit Ave., which is the corner of Detroit and West Clifton. We will begin with a potluck dinner, to be followed by a program led by the Rev. Kath Burn, Rector of Saint Mark's Episcopal Church on Triskett Road in Cleveland.

Burn, author of The Calling of Kath Burn, is originally from England, but came here because ordination of women is not allowed in the Church of England. Her programme (that's for you Kath) on Sunday is entitled, "The Transforming Power of Wounded Healers, or, the Art of Turning Curses Into Blessings". It promises to be an interesting evening.

Last month we heard portions of a tape by Rob Eichberg called "Coming Out: An Act of Love". I hope that it was as helpful to the others present as it was to me. Thanks once again to Mark H. for providing a great topic, and thanks to Rev. Ted Blumenstein, rector of St. Paul's, Marion, for providing the tape we heard.

Ralph Shaw, our convener, attended "Under One Roof" in St. Louis last month. He reports that he had a good time networking for us. I believe he is planning to share some of his experiences with us. We as a group agreed to assist Ralph with finances at the last meeting. We thank Ralph for being willing to go and let the rest of the church know that Integrity North East Ohio exists.

Those of us who are members of the national group received a copy of The Second Stone, an ecumenical lesbian and gay newspaper, last week. There will be a copy at the next meeting for those who haven't had a chance to see it yet.▼

600 march in downtown Cleveland

by Jessica Noble

On June 16, approximately 600 lesbians and gay men and their friends joined Cleveland's first lesbian-gay rights march since 1977.

The 600 marchers, wearing rainbow flags and chanting, "Here we come Cleveland, here we come" walked from Walnut Street in downtown Cleveland to the Pride '90 celebration on West 29th Street.

The march called for full civil rights for lesbians and gay men, an end to antigay harassment, passage of a domestic partners law in Cleveland and better quality health care for people with AIDS.

Some of the participants had come from Toronto, Cincinnati, Columbus, Pittsburgh, and Erie, Pa., to support Cleveland's March for Lesbian and Gay Rights.

Before beginning the march, supporters listened to speakers from the Lesbian-Gay Community Center, the Women's Building Project, the Women's Coffeehouse Collective, Chevrei Tikva and others.

Patrick Fitzgerald of StonewallCleveland said the march was dedicated

to equality for all individuals and specifically to "help the lesbian-gay community achieve social and political recognition.”

He also called on "mass voter registration and education to end discrimination and to establish liaisons with legislators and police."

Representatives from Cleveland's gay youth organization, PRYSM, asked the media covering the march to "look for warmth, energy and spirit, and to put that spirit into their reports."

They also called upon closeted gays and lesbians to openly show their gayness and come out to support the community.

Looking back on the event, march committee leader Susan Schnur said the march "reflected the rainbow of our community," and by being a part of the march "each of us feels a part of the community."

According to Schnur, the lesbian-gay community needs to show mass presence through demonstrating. "To get our civil rights we have to be active and get out [of the closet]."

"We're strong when we're together," she added. "The march was an empowering experience for me."

There was also a letter from Kim Byham, out-going president of Integrity, Inc., concerning an effort to make the church aware that there are non-celibate

lesbian and gay clergy in the church. Some people seem to think that Bishop Spong of the Diocese of Newark is the only bishop who has ordained sexually

active gay and lesbian clergy, and that the majority of the church is opposed to such actions. We have an opportunity to voice our support of such ordinations by completing a form which was enclosed.

It is the bishop and the people who ordain our ministers. As members of the

Episcopal Church we gay and lesbian Christians need to make our needs and

concerns known to the wider church. By completing a copy of the form which Kim sent to us we can do just that. The ordination of non-celibate gay and lesbian clergy, and the blessing of our unions are two issues which deserve our full attention and prayer. Any effort we put forth without the guidance of the Holy Spirit will be of little consequence, so let's make this one of our daily prayer con-

cerns.
